Kathryn Bigelow’s Hurt Locker Should Have Won Globe

Jan 18th, 2010 | By G_Mimms | Category: Movies

Like Jim Cameron said, “I thought Kathryn was going to win. She richly deserves it.” Kind words for Kathryn who really should have won for best director and best picture. Hurt Locker is an amazing, all engrossing film. Based upon the true life story of an bomb diffusing team in Iraq, the tag line reads, “war is addictive.” And by the end of HURT LOCKER, you know that it’s true. [...]

Movie Review: Inglorious Basterds

Jan 16th, 2010 | By G_Mimms | Category: Movies

A great Quentin Tarentino fillm. If you like Quentin’s style, then you will like this film. Dark, funny. quirky — smart. Brad Pitt MADE the film. Were some of Quentin’s other films better? Yes. But don’t let that detract you from seeing this film.

Movie Review: Hurt Locker

Jan 16th, 2010 | By G_Mimms | Category: Movies

A completely different kind of Iraq war film. Kathryn Bigelow’s latest film is no doubt her very best. This film involves you, makes you understand. Engages you from beginning to end. The lead line is: “War is addictive” and by the time you are finished with this captivating film, you know that is true. See this film. It’s up for a Golden Globe and it deserves it.

Avatar Review

Jan 1st, 2010 | By G_Mimms | Category: Movies

I really wanted this film to be visionary. I really did. I think Jim Cameron is about as smart as they come. Good movies are supposed to be about great stories, well told. Avatar is a mediocre story, well told. During the movie I found myself musing — “Ah, Dreamtime, that’s Aboriginal. This is like the Amazon forest invasion. Those bombs look like the deforestation in Vietnam. They sound like [...]

Fox / Time Warner Dispute

Dec 31st, 2009 | By G_Mimms | Category: Movies

I have no dog in this fight. Just to put that out there up front. But here’s the deal. Fox wants to change the game. As of now, Fox gets a dollar per customer, per month for its cable channels from Warner. They don’t get anything for the free channels — that is the channels we would get whether or not we get cable. Local channels. But Fox now wants [...]

Dirty Dancing Idol Patrick Swayze Died Today

Sep 14th, 2009 | By G_Mimms | Category: Movies

Patrick Wayne Swayze was just 57 years old. An amazing actor. I’ll never forget Dirty Dancing — took me years to stop thinking about him. It didn’t surprise me or any of the women around me when People Magazine named him the sexiest man alive in 1991. I met Patrick at the Golden Globes. There were few actors that ever impressed me in my career. But my friends knew my [...]

Thinking of taking the family to the movie this afternoon. Let me help you. Here are the “tag lines” for the movies playing up the at Arclight. Maybe they’ll help. 5000 Days of Summer. This is a story of boy meets girl. ( Now there’s something new) District 9. 30 years ago aliens first made contact with earth. (Not seen before) The Final Destination. On what should have been a [...]

Movie Reviews: Julie & Julia

Aug 22nd, 2009 | By G_Mimms | Category: Movies

Upon seeing this film, my first thought was, “Oh how I wish I were back in France.” My second thought was, “How lovely it would be to sit down to a wonderful supper with some lovely wine. (Beat) Were I not a recovering alcholic.” My third thought was, “Meryl Streep is channeling Julia Childs, but I wish they would get this other girl and/or character out of the film.” The [...]
